CONNECTION THREADS: Medium and High Pressure

For pressures above 10.000 psi / 700 bar it is necessary to employ suitable connections for such demand.

Up to 15.000 psi / 1.000 bar specially prepared NPT conical thread connections are sufficient.

NPT is the most widely used connection thread in the oil industry. It has a taper of 1:16 (one part in 16 of the diameter), a 60º fillet and flat truncation. It is easy to seal with Teflon tape or paste sealers. It is governed by the ANSI B1.20.1 standard.

For higher pressures, employment of Cone & Thread connections is recommend.

Cone & Thread system

In this system, a male cone of small diameter presses against a female cone with a slight difference in angle. This forms a thin contact line that ensures a bubble-tight seal with a relative small force.

ABAC manufactures two types of Cone & Thread connections:

For pressures up to 22.500 psi / 1.550 bar the system is named MU, and for pressures up to 30.000 psi / 2.068 bar it is designated AU.

The figure below shows the technology and the difference between the two systems.
